Celebrating our 60th Anniversary
LATE SUMMER NEWSLETTER
Hello Ladies
Well it has been quite a Summer and we have been spoilt with glorious sunshine occasionally in too large a helping! The golf courses have been bone dry and we are all thinking we can hit the ball a country mile – not always in the right direction!!
There is so much to tell you and still lots to enjoy before the end of the year
European Meeting 2026 at Lake Lucerne, Switzerland
Twelve Society members representing seven HDU clubs flew to Switzerland to play in the European Meeting in June. The SALGC made us very welcome with excellent hospitality and organised a fantastic week for us all playing with ladies from Switzerland, Belgium and Liverpool at Engleberg GC with breathtaking views, Krussnach GC, a very hilly and challenging course and Sempach GC with its impressive clubhouse and lake views. We were also treated to a boat trip from our hotel in Brunnen to the beautiful city of Lucerne. A week of great golf, camaraderie amongst all nationalities and many friendships renewed and new ones made. Congratulations to several of our ladies who were amongst the prize winners - all of us came away with so many special memories of a wonderful trip. The next European Meeting will be hosted by the BALGC in Belgium in 2028 when the 30th Anniversary of the founding of the event will be celebrated.
HDSLGC Match v Bradford Society of Lady Golf Captains on Monday 27th July 2026
The Harrogate and District Society of Lady Golf Captains welcomed the Bradford Society of Lady Golf Captains to Oakdale Golf Club for our biennial match. It was an enjoyable day with the golf being played in challenging conditions of wind and dry ground and with Bradford ladies on top form they won the matches 7:3. We enjoyed hospitality and lively conversation in the clubhouse with bacon sandwiches before play and a delicious meal afterwards. Many thanks to Mel Couchman, our Competitions Secretary who made all the arrangements and also to Oakdale Golf Club for looking after us on the day.
HDSLGC Match v the Hull Society of Lady Golf Captains on Thursday 13th August 2026
On a very hot 13th August, twelve Society ladies travelled to Driffield Golf Club to play our biennial match against the Hull Society. We were made very welcome and six matches got underway but unfortunately due to the extreme heat and the wellbeing and safety of both teams the matches were cut short resulting in a genuine draw. Once inside the clubhouse we enjoyed an excellent meal and lively conversation. Thanks to all the ladies who made the journey and to Mel Couchman for organising the event with the Hull Society for us
President's Charity Day at Pannal Golf Club in aid of Candlelighters on Thursday 20th August 2026

The day was a great success and there were lots of winners of prizes in the raffle as well as the on course prizes. A big thank you to all the volunteer helpers, those who generously donated raffle prizes and the ladies who played in the Putting and Main competitions resulting in a magnificent total in excess of £2000 being raised for Candlelighters. It also provided and opportunity for everyone to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Society with Cremant and Cake at the Halfway House and afterwards back in the clubhouse.

Our Hon Competitions Secretary, Mel Couchman has been busy arranging next year’s events and as I mentioned in my last newsletter it is evident that all clubs across the HDU are having to increase their charges to us. Mel has done a great job in negotiating the green fees but inevitably members are going to have to pay more to play as they are at Open Days and other golf events. Committee have agreed to charge the same entry fee of £30 at both the Spring and Autumn Meetings in 2027 at Otley and Masham which still represents excellent value and the chance to win trophies and monetary prizes.
The notification has just gone out for the Autumn Meeting 2026 at Knaresborough GC on Thursday 24th September and I hope to welcome 60 ladies to the event.
The invitation to the 60th Anniversary Annual Lunch at Pannal GC on will be sent out in early September and this will be the main celebration with all those attending receiving a memento gift, a glass of fizz and some celebration cake. There will be reminiscences from times past, year books and lots of photos to remind us of just how special our Society is and an important link between the clubs in the HDU so I hope to welcome as many of you as possible to the event. It is not too late to send any memories, memorabilia or photos for the Annual Lunch. Contributions can be sent directly to me at claremdavies00@hotmail.com or WhatsApp 07919 484745.
Our final event of the year will be the Autumn Bridge Drive at Pannal GC on Monday 23rd November 2026 details of which will be sent out in October.
With very best wishes
